Institution: Swiss Federation for Adult Learning (SFAL)
Contact: Eckhardt Ruth
Objectives: The poster presents the
SFAL certification system for adult educators.
Description: In Switzerland there are
approximately 60,000 educators and trainers involved in all aspects of
adult learning. Of these, around 14,000 have acquired qualifications in
adult learning in addition to their specialist subject knowledge.
The
building-block system of the vocational education framework provides a
basis for training and certifying qualified adult educators. These
education courses are offered in all three Swiss language regions
(German, French and Italian) and can be selected according to individual
requirements and opportunities.
Four-Stage
Education
The first
stage (Basic) leads to the SFAL Certificate 1. This training is suitable
for people who are involved in education or training on a part-time
basis. It teaches basic skills. More and more adult learning
institutions in Switzerland are requiring their trainers to have the
SFAL Certificate 1.
Those who wish to specialise in education and training, either within an
educational establishment or in company-based adult learning, can
acquire the legally protected title of Swiss Federal Diploma in
Education (Stage 2) by attending further modules and doing a part-time
teaching practical lasting at least four years.
Depending on the subject area, holders of a Swiss Federal Diploma can
gain additional qualifications and training to achieve the Diploma in
Training Management and Human Resources Development. This option has
been available since 2005 and replaces the previous cantonal diplomas
(Stage 3).
Finally, an academic degree in adult learning and training is available
from the University of Geneva. There are also master's degrees available
(University of Berne; Advanced School for Applied Psychology Zurich,
Universities of Teacher Education).
